Confidence Comes After, Not Before
What my daughter taught me about confidence at her dancing class
Stella stood at the edge of the dance floor for weeks.
She wanted to be in it. You could see it all over her face. But she'd hold onto my leg and watch the other kids from the doorway, and every week I'd wonder if this was the week she'd join in.
If I’m honest, the control freak in me was dying inside, she dances all the time at home - why wouldn’t she just do it?!
But the mum (and coach) in me knew this is so scary to her, she needs time to feel comfortable… I mean, most adults would walk into a new room full of strangers and feel nervous to join in.
Then one week she just let go of my hand and joined in. There was no big pep talk. No moment where the nerves disappeared and she suddenly felt ready. She was still nervous. She went in anyway.
And by the end of the term she was the one standing at the front of class, showing me the routine in the kitchen, correcting my arms, telling me I was doing it wrong.
Here's the part I've never forgotten. She didn't join in because she felt confident. She felt confident because she joined in.
We have it backwards
Confidence doesn't always arrive with a bold entrance. It builds quietly, step by step, as we show up for ourselves day after day. It grows every single time we choose to try before we feel ready.
Most of us are still standing in the doorway waiting for a feeling that was never going to arrive on its own. We wait to feel confident before we raise the price. We wait to feel ready before we post the reel, have the hard conversation with the team member, open the spreadsheet and actually look at the numbers.
We treat confidence like a permission slip that turns up in the mail one day, and until it does, we watch from the sidelines.
It doesn't work like that. Confidence is not a prerequisite for action. It's a byproduct of it.
Action is what creates clarity
The other thing waiting does is make everything look bigger than it is.
When you look at the whole goal at once, of course it feels overwhelming. Rebuilding your column. Fixing your pricing. Getting your business to a place where it actually pays you properly. Viewed all at once, from the doorway, it's enormous.
But you don't have to do it all at once. You start with what you have, where you are, and you take one step. Then another. Momentum is built from small, consistent action, not from a perfect plan or a perfect moment.
The clarity comes from the action, not before it. You will not think your way to the answer. You'll find it three steps in, once you've moved and can see the thing from a different angle.
Stella couldn't have known she'd love it from the doorway. She had to be on the floor.
Willing to try, not fearless
You don't need to be fearless to reach your goals. You just need to be willing to give it a crack.
Willing to try. Willing to get it a bit wrong in front of people. Willing to learn as you go. Willing to believe you're capable of more than you currently have the evidence for.
The road won't be smooth… growth rarely is. What matters is that you keep going, keep learning, and keep backing the version of yourself you're becoming, even on the days you can't fully understand her yet.
So what are you standing at the edge of?
There's something you've been circling for weeks. Maybe months. You know exactly what it is, because it came to mind the moment you started reading this.
You don't need to feel ready. You just need to take the first step, and let the confidence catch up.
The road to confidence is action.
Go and join in.
